Golden Retriever
Puppies!
Thinking about adding an adorable golden retriever puppy to your family? You probably have many questions about their temperament, care requirements, and training. Keep reading to find the answers to these questions and to discover how to recognize reputable breeders.
Things to know before adopting your golden retriever puppy
Golden Retriever puppies are excellent family dogs because of their playful temperament. They are not considered quality guard dogs because they love almost everyone they meet.
According to the American Kennel Club (AKC), golden retrievers are “serious workers at hunting and field work, as guides for the blind, and in search-and-rescue, enjoy obedience and other competitive events, and have an endearing love of life when not at work.”
Average size
Your lovable golden retriever puppy grows into a medium size dog. Males grow 23-24 inches tall and weigh between 65-75 pounds. Females grow 21.5-22.5 inches tall and weigh between 55-65 pounds.
Grooming
Golden retrievers have a thick, double coat that sheds twice a year. During shedding season, you will need to groom them several times a week to reduce hair spreading throughout your entire house. Many owners vacuum their homes often because the hair can multiply rapidly. As with most dogs, golden retrievers need occasional baths and have their nails trimmed to be in optimal health.
Exercise
Because they were originally bred to be hunting dogs, golden retriever puppies and adults need plenty of exercise. They can become destructive if they don’t receive daily walks or runs for at least 30-60 minutes a day. If you have an active lifestyle, golden retrievers would love to join you on your runs, bike rides, and trips to the beach.
Temperament
Your golden retriever puppy will be playful and highly energetic. They will love to play with you and provide constant companionship throughout their lifetime. While they require much time and attention in their care and training, your golden retriever puppy will quickly become an important member of your family.
Intelligence
Golden retrievers are incredibly intelligent. Because they are quick learners, they must be mentally stimulated with puzzle toys and games, or they can become bored and destructive. These intelligence and quick learning traits are helpful for training guide dogs, therapy dogs, and search and rescue dogs.
Health
Golden retrievers are prone to several inherited health issues: hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, various eye problems, and heart disease. After they are grown, it is best to
have them vet checked annually to maintain optimal health.
Nutrition
It is best to give your puppy high-quality dog food. They consume a lot of food, and it can be expensive to feed a full-grown golden retriever. It is also not recommended to give your puppy table scraps. Dogs can eat select human foods such as apples, carrots, cucumbers, and eggs. Contact your vet if you have any questions about how to feed your puppy. Learn more about foods your puppy can eat and those to avoid at the World of Dogz.
Training
It is recommended that you attend puppy training classes to familiarize yourself with your puppy’s needs and schedules. The earlier your puppy becomes socialized with various experiences and people, the better. If you work diligently with your puppy, they’ll be eager to please you. However, if your puppy doesn’t receive enough exercise or attention, they’ll be less likely to obey. You can also use treats during training exercises to emphasize good behavior.

Question #2
What should a breeder give you?
According to the American Kennel Club, a reputable breeder should give you a contract to sign. They should also strive to produce healthy puppies. Remember to purchase from reputable breeders when searching for puppies to adopt. Otherwise, you could be funding an organization that mistreats the dogs that are bred.
